IMPORTANT MOBILE TERMS

Here in this post we tell you about some important terms associated with mobile phone, now a days which is a daily need for all of us.

SIM:  Subscriber Identity Module card is a link to the mobile service providers network.  It bears an international mobile station identity that is linked to a mobile phone number. e.g., SIM Serial No 8991762100212001259 can be linked to Mobile no (MSISDN) 9437001259

SIM Security: It has a resetable 4 digit secret password called PIN (Personal Identification Number).  The original setting of PIN is 0000 and it should be entered when you switch on your handset.  The PIN code can be deactivated or reset as per your requirement.  The PIN prevents unauthorized use of your mobile phone.  The procedure to enter, alter or removal of PIN varies from handset to handset. You may refer to your handset manual for more details.
SIM card will be 'blocked' if wrong PIN number is entered three times in succession.

Personal Unlock Key (PUK): If SIM is blocked,  you need a PUK  which can be obtained from the servie provider.  The  PUK should be entered carefully to relase the SIM.  If  PUK is entered wrongly 10 times, it can damage the SIM card permanently.  You will then have to procure a new SIM card.

IMEI - international mobile equipment Identity
The number corresponds to the equipment identity number and consists of four characteristic diagrams , which result in altogether 15 digits.
TAC - type Approval code (6 digits)
FAC - final assembly code (2 digits)
SNR - Serial Number (6 digits)
    FR - save (1 digit)

These number exist in the EIR  -
equipment Identity register it consists of three lists: The white, the gray and the black list.
White List - consists of numbers which are correct and which correspond to standard of the respective GSM net.
Gray List - consists of registered numbers for which some services are to be examined before the service is extended.
Black List - consists of numbers for which no service is to be made available.

MSISDN -Mobile Subscriber Integrated Service Digital Network is the number of a mobile connection.
The MSISDN number consists of not more than 15 numbers and the breakup is-
    Example: 91 94 370 12345

IMSI - International Mobile Subscriber Identity (not more than 15 numbers)  which is a very important number, particularly for International Roaming.  The HLR/VLR etc. identify a mobile subscriber by this number internally, even though the external ID is the MSISDN or the mobile number.  the IMSI is stored on the SIM and in the HLR, VLR, AC databases.

    MCC - Mobile Country Code
    MNC - Mobile Network Code
MSIN - Mobile Subscriber Identification Number consisting HLR + Mobile Number

TMSI - Temporary Mobile Subscriber's Identity.  This is allotted by the VLR as soon as a subscriber enters the Visiting Network.  All through his roaming in that network, the subscriber is referred to with the TMSI only.

MSRN - Mobile Station Roaming Number.  This number is used to set up a connection to the visited Network.

LAI - Location Area Identity is very important for the mobility administration. It consists of three parts, whereby the first two are identical to the in SI number.

GSM (global system for mobile communications): A digital cellular or PCS network used throughout the world.

Airtime: Actual time spent talking on the cellular telephone. Most carriers bill customers based on how many minutes of airtime they use each month. Airtime charges during peak periods of the day vary from that of the off-peak periods of the night. Most carriers offer reduced rates for off-peak usage.

Call Forwarding or Call Transfer: This feature allows a mobile user to program at any time any mobile or landline and, when activated by the station user, all incoming calls to his mobile will be automatically rerouted to that preprogrammed number.

Caller ID (CLIP): (Calling Line Identification Presentation) A call-screening feature that allows the user to view the origin of an incoming call prior to answering the phone. The caller's number is displayed on the mobile handset's screen.

CLIR: < )CLIR:>(Calling Line Identification Restriction)  This is a feature that prohibits the calling number being presented on the screen.  When the call does not want to be identified, this feature can be availed.  This is not available right now.

Hands-free:  An important safety feature that's included with most of today's mobile phones. It permits drivers to use their cellular phone without lifting or holding the hand-set to their ear.  There is an attachment which connects the handset and the ear with an ear-piece.

Off-peak: The period of time after the business day has ended during which carriers may offer reduced airtime charges.

Peak: Highest-usage period of the business day when a cellular system carries the most calling traffic.

Roaming: The ability to use a cellular phone outside of a usual service area ? when traveling, for example.

Service Plan (Tariff Plan): A rate plan selected by subscribers when for cellular service, usually consisting of a base rate for system access and a per-minute rate for usage. Service plans are designed to provide the most cost-effective rates for different types and amounts of usage by the cellular subscriber.

Talk time: The length of time one can talk on a cellular phone without recharging the battery. The battery capacity of a cellular portable or transportable is usually expressed in terms of so many minutes of talk time OR so many hours of standby time.

VMS (Voice Mail Service);  This is a feature that allows your calls being diverted to a Voice Mail Box.  All incoming calls thus will be diverted to the InBox and the caller can record his message for the called party.  The called party can retrieve the messages at his convenience.

SMS (Short Messaging Service): This is a messaging features whereby caller can send a small text of limited number of alphanumeric characters to other mobile users.  Depending on the mutual arrangements between operators, the feature will be available.

Call Hold: While a call is in progress, the call can be kept on hold and another call made or received.

Call Waiting: During conversation, an incoming call can be made to wait till the conversation is over.  Both the called party and calling party will receive an indication that there is a call waiting.

Voice mail: (Also called voice messaging) A computerized answering service that automatically answers your call, plays a greeting in your own voice and records a message. After you retrieve your messages, you can delete, save, reply to or forward the messages to someone else on your voice mail system.

PSTN Charges:  A charge that  local telephone companies are allowed to charge all telephone customers for the right to connect with the local phone network.

Cell:  The basic geographic unit of a cellular system and the basis for the generic industry term "cellular." A city or county is divided into small "cells," each of which is equipped with a low-powered radio transmitter/receiver. The cells can vary in size depending on terrain and capacity demands. By controlling the transmission power and the radio frequencies assigned from one cell to another, a computer at the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO) monitors the movement and transfers (or hands off) the phone call to another cell and another radio frequency as needed.

Frequency reuse: The ability to use the same frequencies repeatedly across a cellular system, made possible by the basic design approach for cellular. Since each cell is designed to use radio frequencies only within its boundaries, the same frequencies can be reused in other cells not far away with little potential for interference. The reuse of frequencies is what enables a cellular system to handle a huge number of calls with a limited number of channels.

Prepaid Service: A system allowing subscribers to pay in advance for mobile service.

Postpaid Service: A system allowing subscribers to pay for mobile service after its usage.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP): A new industry standard for wireless access to the Internet. The protocol allows instant and easy interaction for mobile devices.

Call Conference: The facility to talk to more than one subscriber simultaneously.  All of them can form a conference group at that time.
